[ peg knife's in his boot. he draws it out, and hacks at the branch until it exhibits a point. then, he wiggles the point under the edge of the iron grating that covers the sewer entrance.

a branch shouldn't be able to lever the covering of a sewer grate, but with a bit of wiggling, the grate cover comes right off. ]

[ surprisingly, he doesn't follow-up with a smart-alec remark. even though something like 'oh, she'd make perfect emergency rations' is right on the tip of his tongue.

instead, he quietly tries to wipe a bit of the oily sewage off of the duckling. he does this carefully, like he's used to handling things gently and with great apparent concern.

I don't remember ever saying that I didn't care. [ as he lifts a fluffy duckling, all cleaned up, and places it on his shoulder. quack quack. ]
