The First Miracle

The wind blows gently across his face, ruffling the grass. Beside him, Guriko coughs. He gives her a concerned look, but the face she gives him in return is clear—she’s fine. It’s nothing worse than the usual. Next to her, Walter watches with an unreadable expression.

As he brushes dark hair out of his eyes, Guriko fiddles with the grass and Walter looks up at the sky. It’s a lovely day, with a clear blue sky—the colour of Walter’s eyes, he’d say, if he didn’t think his brother would be annoyed by the remark—and the sun shining down on them. In this moment, everything is peaceful.

It’s times like these, with his family—his important people—that he remembers why life is worth living.

Pushing himself up from where he’s sitting into a crouching position, he examines the flowers that grow in their house’s garden. White like snow and shaped like bells—though they may not be the fanciest flowers there are, he thinks that there’s something uniquely beautiful about them. He takes a hold of one, rubbing a finger over its four petals.

“Guriko, Walter,” he says, as a thought occurs to him. “Do you know the name of these flowers?”

Guriko shakes her head. Walter looks at him with an expression he knows means “no”. He smiles and tells them the name.

“Guriko’s brother is very smart,” Guriko says, before glancing at Walter. “Well, one of them, at least.”

Walter ignores her, which is hardly a surprise. And so, Guriko continues.

“What about its meaning? Don’t flowers usually mean something?” she asks. Again brushing away his hair as the wind blows it into his eyes, he nods.

“That’s right. Guriko is the smart one, I think,” he says. “I don’t know what they mean, though. But if I ever find out…”

He looks back the flowers, in their pale beauty, before gazing back at Walter and Guriko as he smiles again.

“I promise I’ll tell you both.”
