Days Off
—
He was arriving at noon. A glance at the clock confirmed that that was approximately ten minutes away.
Hopefully it wouldn't be a case of a late date, as Serge didn't want to wait—and if the person couldn't even be punctual, then that didn't speak well, did it?
The fact that this was happening was bad enough.
Maria was in her room, presumably fixing her hair or doing other things that girls did (which, of course, Serge had a vast knowledge of, being the expert on all things women). Picking out her clothes. Trying to make herself look pretty, though Serge didn't think that she really needed to try, though perhaps he was a bit biased as her 'big brother'.
Granted, if she weren't pretty, they probably wouldn't be in this mess, as Serge had chosen to deign it. As wonderful as it was that Maria had grown into a beautiful young lady, he would've loved her regardless. What wasn't there to love? She was—
Well, above all things, she was his little sister. She had her positive traits, needless to say, but that was all that mattered.
The difference was that if she were perhaps less pretty, she wouldn't be going on a date.
She didn't even want to go on one, really. Or, well, she didn't quite say that, but it wasn't as if she'd asked the boy out. He'd asked her, Maria had told him, and Serge doubted that she would've been able to say no either way. She was far too sweet for that, and while that was one of the many things Serge loved about her, it made him want to punch something. Kind of. Except no, that would probably be a bad idea.
Still, he was not going to let some boy waltz in and hurt her, thank you very much.
(... What was there even to do in Ebur, anyway? Visit Grantz?)
Five minutes left. Maria still hadn't left her room—something he had absolutely nothing to do with, nope. It was most definitely not as if he tampered with her door beforehand. Why would anyone suspect the innocent (not) old man?
At the very least, Maria certainly wouldn't.
Tapping his foot, Serge wished the boy would just come already, before Maria figured out how to open the door. He glanced out the window—oh. Damn, he had to be good, for said boy was, in fact, almost at their house.
He came early. With flowers, even. Nice. But not enough for Serge to like him.
(Being judgmental was perfectly acceptable when it came to his baby sister, all right?)
Serge opened the door before the boy could. He couldn't risk Maria hearing them, after all. He didn't give him time to respond before he closed the door as quietly as he could—and then proceeded to drag the boy by the arm.
"H-Hey!" the boy protested.
(What was his name, anyway? Maria had told him, but all Serge registered was "guy who wants to date Maria" because really, Maria aside, who cared?)
"Listen, kid..." Serge began.
"My name's Alois," the boy—Alois—muttered in an almost L'Arc-like fashion, and for a moment, Serge almost liked the kid. Almost.
"That's nice," said Serge. "I take it I don't need to introduce myself?"
Alois stared for a few moments, his brain clearly still trying to process what was going on. Finally, he replied.
"Ah... Serge? Maria's older brother? She mentioned you..."
"Right on!" Serge grinned, and it would've seemed friendly if it weren't for the fact that he wasn't exactly in a friendly mood right now. "So, what did she tell you? My magic abilities? I'm a pretty damn good magic user, if I do say so myself. Or my skill with knives?"
"Buh?"
"Oh, but don't just take her—or my—word for it. Here, I'll show you!"
Without waiting for a response, Serge let go of Alois, before withdrawing one of his knives. He tossed it into the air, before smoothly catching it. The fact that this might have been done close to Alois's face was nothing more than bad luck on the boy's part, of course.
"So, how was that?" Serge asked—a question that wasn't really a question. He held out the knife. "How about you try?"
"T-That's okay..." Alois said, his expression making it clear that he was still trying to comprehend all of this.
"No, no, don't be shy!" Serge held the knife closer, as Alois backed away. A few moments passed, before Serge smiled.

"Well, I guess it's fine if you don't want to try today," Serge finally said.
"... Today?" Alois's face was getting increasingly pale.
"Sure. I mean, if you're gonna be spending more time with Maria, then we've gotta bond too. I'll teach you how to do this kind of thing, no problem," Serge said, his smile never faltering, though one couldn't really blame Alois if he interpreted it as "I'll use that time to come up with a way to kill you" kind of smile.
"Right," the boy replied, swallowing. He glanced around for a moment, probably wondering why no one was doing anything about this (obviously, he was relatively new to Ebur and thus had no idea who Serge was, the clueless fool). "Well, it's... really nice to meet you, Serge! A pleasure. But, uh, I just realized that I forgot something at home, so..."
Serge held up his hands. "Hey, don't let me keep you."
Alois nodded—and then proceeded to run like his life depended it. Which it probably did, though Serge was pleased to note that he didn't even look back as he fled. Watching the scene with his arms crossed, he smiled again.
"Well, I think that was a job well done."
—
Maria was a bit upset (and more than a little confused) that her date never showed up, but any concerns were soon forgotten, because when one had company like Serge, who cared about some loser down the street?
As for Alois, his parents were equally confused as to why, on the day of his date with a girl whom they'd known to be nothing but pleasant, he suddenly decided that he needed to go away from Ebur. Far, far away.
(Don't mess with Lightning Leon, kid.)
